Quantum technology has left the realm of science fiction — and the law is racing to catch up. In this webcast, Michael Schallop, partner at Van Pelt, Yi & James LLP and adjunct lecturer at UC Berkeley Law, explains why quantum companies can no longer treat intellectual property as a late-stage legal formality. Drawing on his recent Law360 article, Schallop walks through the decisions that shape long-term value: which innovations to patent and which to guard as trade secrets, how to untangle inventorship and ownership in university spinouts and federally funded research, and how export controls and foreign filing rules can constrain a portfolio before it is ever built.
