Watch as the Executive Director for the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and creator and instructor of Berkeley Law's "AI and the Practice of Law" course, Wayne Stacy, for an extremely topical presentation on the legal implications of AI.
In this webinar, Wayne shared an overview of this cutting-edge, hands-on course that truly focuses on the legal work that matters most: the complex, bespoke legal work, such as strategic counseling, novel argument, and high-stakes negotiation, that depends on human judgment and commands a premium. Rather than training students to move faster through routine tasks, the course trains them to think better with AI at their side. Twelve sequential assignments, from AI-only case memos and RAG-grounded legal research to a Supreme Court oral-argument simulation and a full contract-review workflow build, put students through the same complex matters a senior associate would face, and hold them accountable for the legal judgment behind every AI-assisted work product.
The course is anchored in the 5D's Framework (Design, Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence), Wayne Stacy's extension of the 4D's model that Anthropic adopted for its own AI Fluency curriculum. Design, the added fifth D, is the discipline of applying legal judgment before AI ever enters the process: defining the problem, shaping the desired outcome, and deciding where technology should enhance rather than replace the lawyer's thinking. The result is not a faster lawyer who edits AI output. It is a better lawyer who uses AI to expand the depth, creativity, and reach of legal judgment, on exactly the kind of work that will define the profession's future.
